Why We Exist
Everything Se7enth Swan Publishing Group does is designed to enhance and engage the “brilliant little minds” of African American and Hispanic youth!
We believe that the human mind is a person’s most valuable resource! If children want to be successful in life, they must learn to discipline and nurture their minds. Once they begin to appreciate and value their most precious gift—which is their mind—they will learn how to IMAGINE endless POSSIBILITIES for their own lives!
We provide educational and historical books and audio-visual programming that showcase African American and Hispanic characters and perspectives. These products are designed to nurture the knowledge of and pride in their cultures and histories. Please read our Statement of Purpose below for more information.
Statement of Purpose
Se7enth Swan Publishing Group fills a current, and long-standing, void in the publishing industry. The industry lacks mass-scale, cultural and historical products that are specifically catered to, and designed for, African American and Hispanic youth.
The 2002 U.S. Economic Census reported that there were roughly 3,570 publishing establishments in the United States. Of that total number, less than 2% of firms publish Children’s Books or manufacture other products geared towards helping minority youth develop self-awareness. This is important because research and educational theorists suggest that, in the earliest years of life, people begin to formulate perceptions of their own self-identity.
“The concept of identity is a complex one, shaped by individual characteristics, family dynamics, historical factors, and social and political contexts. Who am I? The answer depends in large part on who the world around me says I am. Who do my parents say I am? Who do my peers say I am? What message is reflected back to me in the faces and voices of my teachers…How am I represented in the cultural images around me? Or am I missing from the picture altogether?”
~Beverly D. Tatum, Author of Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?
