Statement of Purpose
Se7enth Swan Publishing Group fills a current, and long-standing, void in the publishing industry. The industry lacks mass-scale, cultural and historical products that are specifically catered to, and designed for, African American and Hispanic youth.
This is important because research and educational theorists suggest that, in the earliest years of life, people begin to formulate perceptions of their own self-identity.
“The concept of identity is a complex one, shaped by individual characteristics, family dynamics, historical factors, and social and political contexts. Who am I? The answer depends in large part on who the world around me says I am. Who do my parents say I am? Who do my peers say I am? What message is reflected back to me in the faces and voices of my teachers…How am I represented in the cultural images around me? Or am I missing from the picture altogether?”
Beverly D. Tatum, Author of Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?
